The Burns Supper
On January 28th 2012 we will be holding a Burns Supper to celebrate the 253rd anniversary of the birth, on January 25th 1759, of this great Scottish Poet.
Our guest of honor will be Vermont Tourism Commissioner Megan Smith.
A Burns Supper is a significant tradition in Scotland and among Scots around the world. Hear some Burns poetry, enjoy traditional Scottish food - and drink, and see (or wear if you have it) some tartan.
The featured meat dish is of course Haggis, which, while it has an intimidating reputation for some reason, is very enjoyable with a mild spicy taste. The Haggis is of course piped in from the kitchen to the head table and then addressed using the Burns poem of the same name. Here are the first and last verses:
Fair fa' your honest, sonsie face,
Great chieftain o' the pudding-race!
Aboon them a' yet tak your place,
Painch, tripe, or thairm:
Weel are ye wordy o'a grace
As lang's my arm.
Ye Pow'rs, wha mak mankind your care,
And dish them out their bill o' fare,
Auld Scotland wants nae skinking ware
That jaups in luggies;
But, if ye wish her gratefu' prayer
Gie her a haggis!
Rest assured there will be an alternative available if you really don't want to try the signature dish!
In addition to traditional Scottish Fare, and a wee dram to toast the Bard, we will teach you a few Scottish Dances.
The event will be held in our Handsome Red Barn starting at 6PM.
Tickets are just $45. For any two-night stay at the B&B including Saturday 28th January your tickets will be just $35 per person. (Please note that advance ticket purchase is required and only 30 tickets will be sold; VT Tax adds 9%.)
