Great snow!

“Yabba-Dabba-Dooooooooooo!” 12-16 inches of NEW SNOW since yesterday morning and it is still snowing and snowing hard. No kidding, Vermont is really beautiful this time of year! It looks like this will be THE weekend to come to the Mad River Valley and ski Mad River Glen, Sugarbush or do some cross country or snowshoeing at Ole’s or Blueberry Lake. Of course West Hill House is a great place to stay – we’re just a short distance from each of the ski areas. Come enjoy winter with us.

Skiing at Sugarbush

We have two great ski deals this season.

Ski it if you can! New for 2010 – when you stay during the week for 2 or more nights you can enjoy a Mad River Glen ski pass for $30 per day. (2 tickets per room max.) Plus, if Mad River Glen is closed for any reason we will give you $20 per day per room towards lift tickets at Sugarbush.

Then we have the amazingly flexible Ski-the-Valley package, which offers a great way to try all the skiing that the Mad River Valley offers. When you stay two or more weekday nights (Sunday through Thursday) we can add a multi-day weekday (Monday through Friday) Ski the Valley ski pass for up to the same number of days at a very attractive daily rate. The pass lets you go straight to the lifts at Mad River Glen and Sugarbush, and ski at Olé’s Cross Country ski resort – all on the same day if you wish!

The Long Trail – in winter

Long Trail in winter - by Kelly & Paul

Built by the Green Mountain Club between 1910 and 1930, the Long Trail is the oldest long-distance trail in the United States. The Long Trail follows the main ridge of the Green Mountains from the Massachusetts-Vermont line to the Canadian border as it crosses Vermont’s highest peaks.

Access to the Trail is just a few minutes from West Hill House.

Most guests hike on it in the summer months, but Kelly & Paul had a magnificent outing in the December snow and sun – and then Paul proposed at the top of Mt Abraham!

Christmas Carols at West Hill House

This Christmas at West Hill House we were delighted to have two musical families staying with us.

Here are Rick & Ben, accompanied by Rick’s daughter Nicole on the pump organ, singing a Carol on Christmas day in the Sun Room, just before dinner.

Jerry Carving the Turkey

Every year West Hill House has welcomed guests over the Thanksgiving holiday and this year was no exception.

Gathered around our big dining room table, our guests joined with us and enjoyed a traditional Thanksgiving dinner with turkey and all the trimmings. One of our guests was a professional meat cutter and volunteered to carve the turkey.

The evening was an enjoyable mix of good food, good company, and new friendships.

We also have a special dinner on Christmas Day and a Burns Supper on the Saturday closest to January 25th each year.

Lunch time visitor

We never cease to be amazed by the beauty that surrounds us here at West Hill House. The sun through the bare branches of the trees, the clouds that float overhead, the stately pines that blow in the wind, the numerous birds and small animals that scurry around preparing for winter, the list goes on. Yesterday we took this photo through the Sun Room window. While we were having lunch two beautiful deer appeared in our garden not more than 25 feet from us. One ambled over to our pond while the other stopped for a photo op. These two are helping us with the fall clean-up as windfall apples are throughout the garden and the deer seem to enjoy making a stop in our garden for their fruit. It is breath-taking to see these wonderful creatures up close!

Fall Foliage

: Bring on the leaves!

Off to the compost!

What better way to celebrate autumn than to frolic in fall foliage! With huge maple trees surrounding the B&B we get our fair share of leaves on the ground. Many thanks to the couples who took us up on our “Leak Raving” special and joined us in getting our lawns and gardens ready for winter. All our autumn leaves were raked and deposited in the compost and none too soon!

Yesterday morning we awoke to just enough snow on the ground to remind us that the wonderful winter days are just around the corner. It’s not to early to start thinking about reserving a room with us for your winter vacation. Relaxation starts at West Hill House in the Mad River Valley in the Green Mountains of Vermont.

We are excited to share with you our new three minute video of our bed and breakfast. Other than being here, it’s the best way we know of how to experience West Hill House. You can also watch in HD if you have a high speed connection.

The movie was produced by Inn Pictures, and gives a great overview of our inn, the innkeepers, rooms, and the beautiful Vermont hills and countryside surrounding Warren, Vermont.
