Cycling in the Mad River Valley

When you come to the Mad River Valley you will discover an extensive network of mountain biking trails as well as miles and miles of well-maintained two-lane blacktop. At West Hill House we offer indoor storage for your bikes, or if you prefer to rent once you arrive there are bike rentals available at the Sugarbush Adventure Gear Shop just a couple of minutes from the B&B. You can also enjoy many other Summer Activities around West Hill House.

We will provide you with maps and directions for the blacktop routes. If you prefer mountain biking, during the summer months Sugarbush offers mountain biking on some of the ski trails, and runs a lift at weekends to get you to the top of the trail network.

Towards the end of the summer there are two major cycling events:

  • The Century Ride. The Mad River Valley Century Ride is a 100 mile bicycle ride
    James Mattis
    James Mattis
through scenic Vermont countryside. This beautiful, low traffic ride cruises along the Dog, White and Mad rivers, through quaint villages, beautiful countryside and Montpelier, Vermont’s State capital. Lots of fun, great support, and friendly faces all along the way. It is usually held the weekend before the Labor Day weekend. The quaint villages of Waitsfield and Warren, the beautiful countryside, and spectacular mountains make this area ideal for road biking and one of Vermont’s best kept vacation secrets.
  • The Green Mountain Stage Race. This multi-day event is usually held Labor Day weekend and offers 4 days of exciting and challenging racing in the Green Mountains of Vermont. In 2009 we were honored to have James Mattis, the 2008 US Pro National Champion, stay at West HIll House while he was competing in the stage race. Racers should note that our barn offers not only space to store your machines, but also lots of room to set them up and make adjustments.
Check with us for special packages associated with these two events.

Fall at West Hill House

And even through the "official" season is over by Labor day weekend, the fall is a gorgeous time to cycle in the valley to appreciate the amazing foliage display.

After the leaves are on the ground, you are rewarded with amazing views, so the month or so between mid October and Thanksgiving can also make for some great days in the saddle. Come and see for yourself!
