Directions

Warren is just about in the middle of the State, 24 miles south of Montpelier, the State Capital, and 45 miles south east of the airport in Burlington. The Mad River flows north through the town with route 100 in its valley. To the east is the Northfield Ridge (our winter view) and the Green Mountains create the western boundary (our "backyard").

Please remember that we live here and know the roads. Please read through our recommended directions and note our cautions below! If you are coming from the south your GPS or online mapping service will almost certainly NOT guide you on the best route from the highways to here!

You can check current driving conditions and plan your route accordingly - always a good idea in the winter months.

Please note the guidance on Parking. Also note while our location is shown correctly in the adjacent map at the corner of West Hill Road and West Hill Extension, when you click on "Directions" Google sometimes tells you go past our house 1/4 mile to Rocky Road. We think we have this problem fixed, but just in case!

While interactive customized Google map directions are provided alongside - and you can view a LARGER version of the Google Map in a separate window - the simplest way to get here from almost everywhere except SW Vermont and upstate NY, is to come to exit 9 or 10 on Interstate 89, take Route 100B or 100 respectively towards Waitsfield and Warren, then after you pass through Waitsfield, about 3 miles further south look out for a CITGO gas station on your right followed by a green girder bridge which you cross.  While normally we recommend coming up the Sugarbush Access Road, note that it will be closed to traffic on weekdays from August 4 to 18, from 7 a.m. until 5:30 p.m., during the planned replacement of several town culverts. During this time continue about two miles beyond the bridge then turn right on West Hill Road, opposite the entrance to Warren Village which will be on your left. Come up West Hill Road keeping left at each of the three intersections, then you will see West HIll House and our red barn in front of you. Park in the appropriate place depending on your room and come on in!

From SW Vermont and upstate NY head for Rutland VT, then take Route 4 east to Route 100 North. Continue on 100 past the first turn off to Warren then at the north end of Warren Village take West Hill Road on your left then follow the local directions above.

Cautions:
  • If you are coming north on I 89, Google, MSN etc., and most GPS systems suggest taking exit 3 through Bethel and over the hills to Route 100, or exit 5 onto Route 64 towards Northfield and the Roxbury Gap. These are both valid routes but they are complicated and very easy to get lost on, particularly at night. Also the exit 5 route is NOT recommended in winter and mud season as much of the road over the Roxbury Gap is steep and unpaved. Instead continue to exit 9 and take 100B then 100 south - it only takes a few minutes longer.
  • West Hill Road from Route 100 to Inferno Road is NOT a recommended route during winter months and mud season; use the Sugarbush Access Road route, noted above, instead. Whichever way you come in winter, snow tires or all season radials in good condition are a must. Be prepared for snow covered roads.
  • The Lincoln Gap is closed during the winter months and your GPS or mapping service may not reflect this.  The Lincoln Gap from Bristol to Warren is currently posted as OPEN.When it is closed, if you are coming from this direction continue on Rte 17 after you pass through Bristol and come over the Appalachian Gap to Rte 100 in Waitsfield instead - note this is also a steep and twisty road but it is open year-round, although NOT recommended in winter.

Parking:

When you arrive please note the following guidance for parking:

Parking at West Hill House

  • When you park in front of our red barn please park diagonally - not blocking the big sliding doors - so that we can get our vehicles out of the barn. Come across the road to the front door. Please ring the door bell on the intercom to let us know you have arrived, then come on in.
  • For the Garden Room come in the door under the portico up the flagstone walkway and your room is directly to the left. Please ring the door bell to let us know you have arrived and come on it. Please make sure you close the outside door FIRMLY and ensure it latches.
  • For the Paris Suite use the steps up to the deck, ring the door bell at your private entrance to the suite and we will come and let you in!
Whichever way you come in, please leave your outdoor shoes on the mats near the inside of the doorway.

Please do not park on the roadway, even to load or unload, and when you come in please take care not to let the cats out!

Should you find that you'll be later than about 8 pm, we'd appreciate a call. If we go to bed, we'll leave a note on the front door directing you to your room and we'll give you a proper welcome in the morning!
