Directions

Warren is just about in the middle of the State, 24 miles south of Montpelier, the State Capital, and 45 miles south east of the airport in Burlington. The Mad River flows north through the town with route 100 in its valley. To the east is the Northfield Ridge (our winter view) and the Green Mountains create the western boundary (our "backyard").

While more specific, and customized, directions are provided below, the simplest way to get here from almost everywhere except SW Vermont and upstate NY, is to come to exit 9 or 10 on Interstate 89, take Route 100B or 100 respectively towards Waitsfield and Warren, then after you pass through Waitsfield, about 3 miles further south look out for a CITGO gas station on your right followed by a green girder bridge, then turn right on the Sugarbush Access Road for 3 miles up to the "T" intersection at the Sugarbush base. Turn left onto Inferno Road for one mile which will take you to West Hill Road very close to the Inn. Turn right at the "Y" and you will be right here! Note also that the Lincoln Gap is closed for the winter. Please note the guidance on Parking below.

The Lincoln Gap from Bristol to Warren is still closed to all traffic.

Please also note the local guidance above. If you are coming north on I 89, Google sometimes suggests you take exit 4 onto Rte 66 then 12A, then Braintree Mountain Road - which is NOT in fact a through road!  Instead take exit 3 to Rte 107 then Rte 100 north.

Please watch your speed in Vermont. Limits are strictly enforced.

For specific directions click on the city name below:

From New York City/Hartford: I 95 North to I 91 North to I 89 North at White River Junction, to exit 3, Bethel/ Royalton, then west on Rte. 107 (which turns left in Bethel) for 13 miles, then north for 30 miles on Rte. 100 to Warren (note the varying speed limits on this road!).. When you see the sign saying "Warren ->" keep on Rte. 100 for about one more mile and look for West Hill Road on your left, and the north entrance to Warren village on your right. Turn left (west), go up the hill 1.2 miles, staying left at ALL forks. (Note that there are some sections of gravel road.) West Hill House is on the right where West Hill Road bends sharply left, just after Inferno Road enters from the right. In extremely stormy winter weather, the best route is NOT to leave Interstate 89 at exit 3, but rather keep going to exit 9 and follow the simplest way above.  It's a bit longer but easier driving. Please note the guidance on Parking below.

From New Jersey/New York City/Albany: I 287 to I 87 (NY Thruway) to Albany to I 87 (Adirondack Northway) exit 20, left at light at end of exit ramp, onto 9 North for less than 1 mile then right at light onto 149 east. Go about 12 miles to Fort Ann, turn left at intersection of Rte 4. Continue on Rte. 4 about 40 miles - caution, in Rutland Rte 4 makes a left, then a right a few miles later, watch the signs - to Rte. 100 North near Killington. Go north on 100 for 40 miles towards Warren (note the varying speed limits on this road!). When you see the sign saying "Warren ->" keep on Rte. 100 for about one more mile and look for West Hill Road on your left, and the north entrance to Warren village on your right. FOR ALL ROUTES NOTE THE LOCAL MAP and see additional details in the directions below:

Map with directions to West Hill House

Color-coding on map:

Red is Route 100, the main route to Warren. Note that Warren Village is not on 100, but on a little Main Street that goes east from 100 south of the village and returns to 100 about a mile north. Main Street and West Hill Road are the same street at the north end of Warren Village, Main Street being to the east of 100 with West Hill Road continuing to the west of 100.

Green is the most direct way to the inn, up West Hill Road - but it's steep and not the first road plowed in snowstorms. Use it for dry weather.

Blue is a better route in inclement weather. The Sugarbush Resort Access Road is plowed, sanded and salted early and often in snowy weather.

Pink is the route to take when the roads are icy. German Flats Road from Route 17 is the least steep road up the mountain. 17 goes west from 100 at the south end of Waitsfield Village.

Parking:

When you arrive please note the following suggestions for parking:
  • For all rooms – except the Garden Room and the Paris Suite, park in front of our red barn and come across the road into the inn. Please park diagonally - not blocking the big sliding doors - so that we can get our vehicles out of the barn.
  • For the Garden Room continue just past the front of the Inn and park in the area on the right beside the house. Come in the door under the portico up the flagstone walkway and your room is directly to the left. Please make sure you close the outside door FIRMLY and ensure it latches.
  • If you are staying in the Paris Suite continue up the West Hill Extension road to the right of the inn for about 100 feet to the parking spot on your left with access to the deck with its private entrance to the suite.
Which ever way you come in, please make sure we know you have arrived so that we can greet you and show you around.

Please do not park on the roadway, even to load or unload, and when you come in please take care not to let the cats out!

Should you find that you'll be later than about 7 pm, we'd appreciate a call. If we go to bed, we'll leave a note on the front door directing you to your room and we'll give you a proper welcome in the morning!

GPS Guidance:

While "West Hill House" should be listed under "Lodging" on your GPS system, if you plan to use your GPS for routing in the winter months we RECOMMEND an alternative approach. Enter "Sugarbush Inn" in your GPS Lodging menu or  44.145631; -72.879310 if you use coordinates – either will take you to the Sugarbush Inn (big yellow building) at the intersection of Sugarbush Access Road and German Flats Road. When you get to the Sugarbush Inn do not turn into the parking lot. Continue south west  on the Sugarbush Access Road (turn right, not left, if you are coming along German Flats Road) for about another mile to the Sugarbush base. Then turn left onto Inferno Road and head south east for another mile to West Hill Road.  Turn right and you you will see West Hill House ahead of you.

This approach should keep you on safe roads year round! (The reason for this guidance is that shortest routes plotted by GPS systems to West Hill House often take you over the Lincoln Gap which is closed in the winter or bring you up West Hill Road from Rte 100, which can be challenging or even not possible when it is snow covered.)
